DIGITAL COLLAGE
Who am I

This piece was made inspired by Rene Magritte's Son of man. Similar to how Magritte uses an apple to cover the man's face, I used a garbage can representing poor self esteem.

planning
I started with some basic ideas of what I wanted to make with images in Photoshop. I had an Idea to show myself looking into a mirror and the reflection would show me laughing at myself. However I realized I needed to make sure to have an artistic inspiration. Once I Found my inspiration most of the planning was Figuring out how I wanted to use Rene Magritte's Son of Man, in my own piece. Because the topic had to be something that we struggled with and were changed by. I was changed by a period in my life where I was unhappy with myself. I started by looking at the pictures that I already had, and finding those I didn't.

I also sketched out what I thought the final product would look like to give my self an idea of how to create it in photo shop, as shown to the left. This helped a lot because I had all the final photos in separate documents, and was hard to remember which photos to use. one thing that I should have done for my planning was taking notes on how proportionate each picture were to be with each other. I was able to come up with a good collage, but proportions are the most important part in making something look realistic, and I needed my digital collage to look fairly real to follow with my design, and inspiration.

Images Used |
ProcessThe digital collage was made by using a camera and Photoshop crop, re-size, and alter photos to get the final product. I used pictures of myself, and of objects either around my house, or in the city. The garbage can photo is actually outside of target, and I chose it because it resembled an apple the most out of the choices. Once the photos were taken, most of the work after the pictures was using Photoshop to arrange and cut the images to my liking. The background was a photo of a school hallway that I already had. I started by cutting out the garbage can figure using the quick select tool. after I need to fix the angle of the trash can, to make it level rather than on its side.

Inspiration
Rene Magritte's Son of Man was the inspiration of my piece. Rene Magritte has always been a favorite artist of mine, and i thought what better way to express myself, but through his work. I Used a lot of the symbols in his piece, and brought them into mine. The apple covering the mans face is represented in the garbage can in front of my face, also there is a hand that is throwing out trash, which creates an apple stem like shape. I also took a picture of my self with my hands to my side. I chose not to be wearing a suit like the man in the painting is, and that is because I wanted to look like how I normally do. The school setting fit me, and who I am. I am just a normal person, and these feelings are just hidden.

Reflection
What I felt I Could Improve OnThere are some things i felt i could of improved on. One thing I feel that would have improved the look of my digital collage, would be making sure the lighting situations in all my photos matched better. My piece doesnt look entirely off, however it would have looked more cohesive if all the photos had a brighter light source.

What I Did WellWhat I did well in this piece was using my inspiration to its full potential. many times i struggle to use a fine art, artist as an inspiration for the piece I make. With the digital collage, I started with Magritte's "Son of Man" and worked my project around it. I felt I was able to incorporate many of the distinct elements in Magritte's piece, in a different way in my piece.
