MIAD Sculpture

April wood, foam, and aluminium sculpture 30.48 X 30.48cm This project is partially based of of modern Japanese architecture, as well as constructing forms around light. My inspiration affected my placement of the blocks together, but didn't change the project goal to incorporate light with the design. |
Planning
When Bob presented the project to the class, he made clear that the most important part to plan out was how the light was going to go through the board. In order to plan for this I made some sketches of possible cutting patterns, the black lines would be cut into the wooden board, and the darkest part, or part with the x would be the void, where the most light came out. We also needed too have at least one right angle created so I made some designs that purposefully were as unsymmetrical as possible, because that was another key trait. I chose the one on the left, and started playing with ways I could place blocks on the board, but Bob from MIAD said that I needed to focus on the light, and the blocks would fall into place.
Process
Once my design had been picked I started by gathering materials. In the beginning I simply wanted any objects that would easily fit into any style. The design of the light didn't really follow my inspiration but that was because that was how we had to follow the rules of the project, and I knew that I would incorporate my inspiration into the placement of blocks. Once I gathered my materials, I began by creating some kind of base, or infrastructure. For my piece this was the bridge, by the red metallic strip. I just started with that, and soon the bridge became the entrance to this world. I then placed a series of blocks together in different areas on the board. With each clump I wanted to have the light play off of it some how. Eventually I ran out of blocks that Mr. Chad had available to us, so I started to create my own. Using a cross-cut saw I cut 3' X 4' pieces of would into sizable blocks that could be used in the project. Once I finished placing the blocks to fit my inspiration, and goal, I added green foam half semi-cylinders. These fourths of a cylinder were used to represent shrubs, and balance the work.

Inspiration
Modern Japanese architecture is not just based on elements of design, it is based on the limited space in certain areas of japan. As an example I wanted focus Tokyo in japan. I researched what housing looks like in japan, and found that there are large clumps of houses, with space in between each clump. There also is few organic forms in the design, since there is such little space in these high density cities. However there still is foliage, and that Is why I wanted to balance the geometric forms of the buildings. One difference between modern Japanese architecture, which is the space between some of the forms. Most of the buildings have to be close together, and my artwork could have been close to the inspiration, however I also needed to focus on the light aspect.

Reflection
What I Thought I did WellI Think that I was successful in using the light to create forms, and to tell a story based on the placement of my blocks.

What I Could Improve onThe first thing I know that I could Improve on was my use of glue in the work. To be far I think I used the worst possible glue for the project. I should have just used wood glue. My glue would set by foaming, this would then move the block I attempted to keep in place. Of course If I could go back I would change the glue I used, but I also could have tried to remove the excess glue.
