DRY POINT
Planning
When making the dry point, the end goal was to create a drawing that you could use to trace over with the tool to carve into plastic. I had started with the idea of using Art Nouveau, because of the beautiful line work that works so well with the dry point process. I also included Pop Art in my inpiration, which fit well with my final design. The drawing on the right was my first attempt, and I was unsucceful. I say this becuase overall the perspective was off, and the drawing didn't have enough of the Art Nouveau, or Pop art aspects. My second attempt made up for my first in everyway. After practicing, the hair came out much better and fit the same hair style in Mucha's Paipier a cigarettes, also the face fit the Pop Art characteristics I wanted.

Once I chose the design that I wanted I was able to create a copy by using pencil. It wasnt hard to make what I wanted with pencil because I could always erase and fix what I wanted to. After getting a good enough copy I placed the plastic over my drawing I began to use the carving tool, tracing over what I had previously drawn. This was the most difficult part. After attempting many times and failing, I realized two tips to keep in mind. Always bring the tool towards your body, and go as slow as possible. Once I began to pull the tool towards my body the carving motion became much less choppy and inaccurate.

Inspiration and Theme

Two of the artists that inspired me was Roy Lichtenstein and also Alphonse Mucha. I really tried to emulate the hair style in Papier a Cigarettes by Mucha. The thin lines and flow of the hair was hard to carve, but it creates a nice effect. The overall style of my dry point follows Lichtenstein's Crying girl. The theme of the piece was power, and how too much power affects people. As shown in the print, the girl has these white eyes, like a goddess or a deity of some kind, yet she is crying, something that no goddess would ever do. That is because power is a human thing, when people have too much power there are many side affects. I don't feel it necessary to explain what power does to people, because everyone knows, in fact it has probably happened or will happen to someone in their life, where they are affected by having too much power.

Refection
What I could improve onI really struggled to carve smooth and flowing lines. While I was able to make a strong drawing to trace, however I was challenged by the carving. I probably would make a whole new carving if i had the time, and try to make up for the mistakes I made with lines that weren't clean. Where the hair frizzles out, there is a spot that looks like it is undefined, and could use some better spacing on my part to make it better.

What I felt I did wellAlthough My final print wasn't as smooth as I wanted it to be, I really did like how it still fit with pop art, and with Art Nouveau. The message is still there in the end. I also think that the lines were very clearly seen. I was worried that my lines wouldn't be dark enough but they turned out dark enough to see very clearly.
